Vitamin E is a major antioxidant and the primary defense against lipid peroxidation. It is particularly important in protecting the body's cells from free radical/oxidative damage. These protective benefits are achievable with supplemental intakes. This mineral detoxifies heavy metals, protects against environmental and chemical sensitivities, and enhances the body's antibacterial and antiviral defenses. A variety of animal and human studies point to its ability to inhibit colon, cervical, breast and liver cancers.
A new study from the University of Minnesota has shown that vitamin E taken for just two weeks increases the LDL cholesterol's resistance to oxidation up to three fold. Oxidation is the process that is crucial to LDL's conversion to "bad" cholesterol, which in turn paves the way for its entry into the plaques that narrow vital arteries. The researchers also found that in cell cultures, elevated levels of vitamin E appeared to prevent or reduce the ability of oxidized LDL to injure the cells that line blood vessel walls. This study is just further proof that vitamin E is one the the best antioxidants for fighting vascular disease, including heart disease and stroke. |
